En Plein Air Workshop

Jim Carson
June 22, 23, & 24
9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
$475

We are teaming up with artist Jim Carson for his first painting workshop with the gallery! Jim is a nationally recognized painter whose workshops often generate waiting lists within the first days of being announced.

This three-day workshop is slated for June 22, 23 and 24. Being a versatile instructor, Jim will accommodate students at any skill level. We are limiting this class to 8 persons so that we can allow for proper social distancing yet still remain a cohesive group to allow for the most learning and feedback.

Jim’s national recognition includes the Neil Patterson Award of Excellence (as part of the 2019 Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition for Traditional Oils), and the Associate Member Award of Distinction at the American Impressionist Society Exhibition, in 2015.

His favorite subject matter, whether he’s working on a landscape outdoors, a cityscape, or an interior, or still life, is catching and carrying the light and the patterns of shadows into the painting. He’s especially recognized for the creative color balance he brings to his paintings and his bold and spontaneous brushwork.

Jim is a Signature Member of The American Impressionist Society, a member of Plein Air Painters of the Southeast (PAPSE—a group of distinguished Southern artists), a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, and a member of the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City.

This workshop includes a healthy lunch, snacks and drinks, and wine to wind down at the end of the day.😎 The final day will include a show-and-tell session and critique in the gallery.

The cost for the workshop is $475. Email Suzanne Camarata with any additional questions you may have!

In the first half of this Workshop, students will learn and create a number of classic Watoji style bound books. Creative Scribbling with Marsha Hammel

Creative Scribbling with Marsha Hammel

Just as musicians practice scales every day to remain limber and agile at their instrument so, too, artists should practice every day.

Dancers, singers, all the creative artists must practice- every day!

Scribbling with charcoal, crayon or graphite on newsprint or even butcher’s paper allows the artist to loosen up, to make a mess with no judgement as to how it looks and no great expense in materials. Drawing without looking at the paper reveals interesting perspectives and builds confidence. To feel the stroke of the line as it expresses gesture is an exercise in building skill regardless of the artist’s level.

We will not necessarily work up a sweat, but we will have a great workout and lots of fun!

Suminagashi - Fun Paper Marbling with Japanese Sumi Ink

Suminagashi - Fun Paper Marbling with Japanese Sumi Ink

Suminagashi is a very fun and meditative way of marbling paper (making marble-like designs on paper) using an ancient Japanese technique and Sumi-Ink. Drop-by-drop different colors of the special Sumi-Ink are floated on the surface of a water basin. The ink spreads over the surface of the water like oil in concentric but random forms. A piece of paper is lowered carefully into the basin picking up the floating Sumi-Ink design. For many centuries, the Japanese have used Suminagashi to make decorative paper for their scrolls (Makimono), books and stationary. In this workshop, we will create beautiful designs on paper that can be used as stationary, envelopes or be mounted as works of art themselves. The process is fascinating to everyone from the creative type to the engineer, and anyone can do it, so everyone can produce beautiful art in a Zen-like, stress-free environment.
