Basic Bookmaking Bundle (prerequisite to other workshops)
Explore the basics of bookmaking and make three different books. You’ll learn fundamentals of bookbinding including: the parts of a book; selecting papers, threads, and glues; using bookmaking tools; and much more.
The three books you will make are:
Five-hole pamphlet stitch
Japanese stab stitch
Cased-in (glued) binding with hand-sewn text block
You’ll take home a resource list for future reference, along with detailed instructional handouts so that you can recreate these books on your own. This workshop will help you form a well-rounded core of knowledge as a foundation for building your bookmaking skills.
A handmade book is versatile treasure. It can be used as a personal journal, sketchbook, travel diary, family stories, original poetry, collection of quotes, a dream diary, a wine or restaurant log, or a notebook for your purse or backpack. They also make great gifts.
No bookmaking experience is needed for this basics class, but it’s helpful if you know how to thread a needle and use a ruler.
All materials are provided, and the instructor will bring bookbinding tools and other supplies for students to use in the workshop.
Note: This comprehensive workshop is a prerequisite for further workshops with DJ Gaskin, unless you already have solid bookmaking knowledge and experience.
