In a celebration of ephemeral beauty, The Gallery at Flat Rock is pairing twenty professional floral designers with an equal number of artists to present imaginative interpretations of juried works of art for its Eighth Annual Art in Bloom exhibit, September 1-3, 2023.

We're so excited to highlight the work of local painter Marty Whaley Adams in the next in our series of Artist Spotlight events, happening from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 19. This informal meet-and-greet event will feature a collection of Marty's most recent paintings, created in her home studio over the past year.

Marty’s mini-show in the Gallery will continue until Saturday, August 26.

“A Father-Daughter Pop-Up Art Show”

Studio exhibition to feature the work of

sculptor Holland Van Gores and newcomer painter Julie Van Gores

The Gallery at Flat Rock and Marsha Hammel’s “Studio on Kanuga” are excited to present a pop-up exhibition of the work of father-and-daughter artists Holland Van Gores and Julie Van Gores. “A Father-Daughter Pop-Up Art Show”—which will be held at Hammel’s studio space on Kanuga Road—will open with a reception on Sept. 13 and be available for viewing for just three additional days following the opening. The show will serve as an introduction to the work of Julie Van Gores, a painter in oils and watercolor. Julie’s father Holland, who is represented by The Gallery at Flat Rock, is well known for his polychromed wood vessel sculptures. He will be exhibiting new work as well as legacy pieces in this two-person show. The artistic relationship of Holland and Julie reflects the longstanding tradition of creatives from different generations inspiring and encouraging each other as artists, says Hammel.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is thrilled to present a solo exhibition by Hendersonville artist Susan Webb Tregay from August 4 through 21. “Triple Vision” will highlight Susan’s artworks in acrylics and mixed media, including “Range of Motion,” “Turning the Tables,” and her “Free-Range Children” series, as well as a series of landscapes created during COVID called “Where the Rivers Flow West.”

An opening reception for “Triple Vision” will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday, August 4.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is thrilled to present an exhibition of paintings by Marty Whaley-Adams from June 30 to July 31, 2022, with an artist talk scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 16. “Moments in Time” is the first show of Whaley-Adams’ work at The Gallery at Flat Rock. Whaley-Adams has a long personal history with art, and while she hasn’t exhibited for many years, she’s a prolific painter who creates daily—mostly in her favorite genre, still life, but also dog portraits, people portraits and landscape.

“Fabulous Fakes”

The Art League of Henderson County is mounting a “Fabulous Fakes” exhibit and sale of members’ work at four local galleries (Art on 7th, Art MoB, The Gallery at Flat Rock and Woodlands Gallery) from Saturday, April 2 through Sunday, April 10. Fifty-eight artists have chosen familiar works as inspiration, creating their own tweaked “fake”. Each piece will be displayed with an image of the original inspiration so that viewers can compare and find the differences. Showing that inspiration can come from many places, there are fakes of works from Botticelli and Monet to Picasso and Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present a two-person exhibit featuring married artists Ruby Bock and Barry Rhodes, with work centering on the influence of the landscapes of western North Carolina, where the couple has adjacent studios on their property in Madison County. The artwork of “In a Quiet Cove” will range from pottery and fiber art to photography, with each piece evoking the essence of the artists’ surroundings in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present a lighthearted group exhibit focused on objects and materials that are iconic to childhood and playtime. “Child’s Play” will feature the work of four local artists: Don Greeson, Jean Greeson, Janet Hickey, and Janet Orselli.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present its first-ever community project that will simultaneously celebrate the Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras. The ticketed “Pray, Love, Eat” event on Feb. 13 will combine a workshop in traditional origami technique, an exhibition of artwork from artists in the community and yummy homemade dumplings. A portion of the proceeds from sales of “Pray, Love, Eat” exhibition artwork will support the programs of the Arts Council of Henderson County.

“Transcendence” will be on view at The Gallery at Flat Rock from January 21 – February 28 and is free and open to the public. The exhibit will be available to view in-person as well as online at galleryflatrock.com.

Both Katherine Maloney and Alec Hall cite a deep interest in animals of all kinds, and while Katherine works in clay and Alec works in pastels, the two artists align in their lifelong appreciation of the natural world. “Sacred Animalia” runs October 8- November 1 and is free and open to the public.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present an exhibition of the work of six landscape painters that have been meeting regularly “en plein air” during this time of social distancing as a way to encourage their personal creative work. The six Western North Carolina artists—who include Scott Boyle, Jim Carson, Gary Cooley, Mitch Kolbe, Rich Nelson, and Richard Oversmith, have been regularly meeting for socially distanced outings in locations around the Asheville and Hendersonville areas.

I had the idea of making a series of individual trees as I have spent a lot of time outside in the woods throughout my life. The outline and form of a tree against the backdrop of the landscape and sky are very unique and interesting.

José Bayro C., The Tinkerer from Bolivia is especially moved by immigrants, laborers, and craftspeople from all over the world that inhabit the outlying areas of cities, towns, and neighborhoods. The freedom, vulnerability, and humor with which they construct their own communities are a source of inspiration for him. This is the theme for the collection of work which has been created especially for this exposition.

The Gallery is excited to welcome Veronika Hart who will be featured during a solo exhibition October 4 through October 21, 2019. Veronika’s exhibition is titled, On Eye Level with Power, Beauty and Loss.

As a child I loved spending time in the woods behind my home, letting my imagination carry me away. As I grew up, my fanciful notions led to introspective thinking, seeking meaning beyond the visible, and a growing trust in my instincts. Now in my 70’s, reflecting on my creative path these last two decades, I realize that my paintings don’t represent places or experiences, but they are an internal response to who I am. My art threads through many doorways searching for my essential self.
