"The BIG Little Show"

Exhibit to feature small format, affordably priced artwork by artists from The Gallery at Flat Rock

An exhibit titled 'The BIG Little Show,' featuring affordable art by 20 plus artists, will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 31 at The Gallery at Flat Rock. Each artwork—from paintings and works on paper to mixed-media wall hangings—is limited in size to a maximum of 12 by 12 inches and will be priced at $250 or less.

The BIG Little Show' will open on Thursday, Nov. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. with a free public reception at the gallery.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present The BIG Little Show, featuring affordable art by 20-plus gallery artists. The exhibit will run from Nov. 16 to Dec. 31 at the gallery. Each artwork—from paintings and works on paper to mixed-media wall hangings—is limited in size to a maximum of 12 by 12 inches and will be priced at $250 or less. The BIG Little Show will open on Thursday, Nov. 16 with a reception at the gallery from 5 to 7 p.m. The BIG Little Show is free and open to the public.

"'The Big Little Show' is an opportunity for our artists to experiment with something new and be challenged by working in a size that's smaller than most typically use," says Suzanne Camarata, owner of The Gallery at Flat Rock. "For budding art collectors, it’s a chance to buy art at an affordable price point."

For some artists, working in a smaller format is what they're most comfortable with. Hendersonville-based watercolorist John Anderson says, "As a Whiskey Painter who typically works in a maximum size of four by five inches, working in a 12-inch format seems large." Anderson adds that he hopes the show's affordable pricing will encourage viewers to buy original artwork for their holiday gift-giving.

Marsha Hammel, a career painter working in oils, says, "A smile is a little thing but it can have a big influence on someone’s day, and it's the same with art—it doesn’t have to fill a wall to have an impact."

To reduce costs, mixed-media artist Ruby Bock likes to use inexpensive materials like found objects, paper headed to the recycling bin, and old clothing that's beyond repair. "It is a form of recycling, and a challenge to make something beautiful out of everyday materials," she says.

"I enjoy working small, possibly because of an overactive mind and short attention span," Ruby adds. "I make art because it feeds my mind and soul. I'm happy when the work speaks to someone else and they show that by buying it. If the work is priced reasonably, more of it might sell, and everyone wins —the maker and the buyer!"

The Gallery at Flat Rock represents thoughtfully curated fine art and craft, and is located in Flat Rock Square at 2702-A Greenville Highway in Flat Rock, North Carolina. The Gallery at Flat Rock is thrilled to be participating in Marked Tree Vineyard's annual La Vie en Rosé fundraiser event to support the Arts Council of Henderson County! This three-day arts, music, and wine festival, taking place over the weekend of June 9, 10, and 11, will include a fun fashion show on Friday evening, June 9. Four local establishments will supply fashion for the catwalk, and we're proud to have local fabric artist Ash Rana represent The Gallery at Flat Rock for this fashion show. Rana is also joining the gallery as a new artist!

Henderson Country Sketchbook Book Launch

with John W. Anderson

While many of you know John as an outstanding watercolor painter, he also had a 40+ year career as a successful architect. This book brings him back to his roots of his love of historic buildings--researching and rendering them as a memory of places he visited. We are so pleased he decided to turn an eye on the town he now calls home and created "Henderson County Sketchbook." There are 52 drawings of local buildings and landmarks, some of which depict several of his favorite haunts, including Hot Dog World, The Starving Artist art supply store, and the Erle Stillwell-designed building that houses The Gallery at Flat Rock. “I look forward to sharing some of my graphic images of familiar landmarks in the county we call home,” says Anderson.

Individual copies of “Henderson County Sketchbook” are available the gallery for $40 each. Also, the original prints are for sale at the gallery for $150 each. Presented in a 12 x 16" mat, they fit into a ready made frame.

Jan has been taking inspiration from the changing summer-to-fall season and all of the fascinating textures and colors that are now emerging around us. The light is more intense this time of year, too, and Jan assimilates a sense of light into her jewelry design by incorporating a variety of textures and surfaces (think sparkle mixed in with matte, and intriguing use of asymmetry) as well as unique color combinations. Come shop from her newest one-of-a-kind creations!

Jan will also have her handmade cards, mixed media collages on birch board, and scarves for sale too! Her talent knows no bounds.

“A Father-Daughter Pop-Up Art Show”

Studio exhibition to feature the work of

sculptor Holland Van Gores and newcomer painter Julie Van Gores

The Gallery at Flat Rock and Marsha Hammel’s “Studio on Kanuga” are excited to present a pop-up exhibition of the work of father-and-daughter artists Holland Van Gores and Julie Van Gores. “A Father-Daughter Pop-Up Art Show”—which will be held at Hammel’s studio space on Kanuga Road—will open with a reception on Sept. 13 and be available for viewing for just three additional days following the opening. The show will serve as an introduction to the work of Julie Van Gores, a painter in oils and watercolor. Julie’s father Holland, who is represented by The Gallery at Flat Rock, is well known for his polychromed wood vessel sculptures. He will be exhibiting new work as well as legacy pieces in this two-person show. The artistic relationship of Holland and Julie reflects the longstanding tradition of creatives from different generations inspiring and encouraging each other as artists, says Hammel.

For his second book of poems, “I Pray You,” published in 2021, Tim created a book of blessings that reflect the beauty and terror of being alive in the real world. Tim credits inspiration for the book to the late Irish poet John O’Donohue, particularly O’Donohue’s book “To Bless the Space Between Us: A Book of Blessings.” The poems in “I Pray You” are drawn from Tim’s real-life experiences being on the front lines of trying to keep vulnerable people safe in the middle of a pandemic.

“Fabulous Fakes”

The Art League of Henderson County is mounting a “Fabulous Fakes” exhibit and sale of members’ work at four local galleries (Art on 7th, Art MoB, The Gallery at Flat Rock and Woodlands Gallery) from Saturday, April 2 through Sunday, April 10. Fifty-eight artists have chosen familiar works as inspiration, creating their own tweaked “fake”. Each piece will be displayed with an image of the original inspiration so that viewers can compare and find the differences. Showing that inspiration can come from many places, there are fakes of works from Botticelli and Monet to Picasso and Bartholdi’s Statue of Liberty.

Special event alert! At 3pm on Sunday Aug. 29, we invite you to join us at @markedtreevineyard for an interactive artist demonstration and discussion with José Bayro C., aka “The Tinkerer.”

José is a visiting GFR artist from Puebla, México. A versatile and playful artist, José works in sculpture, painting and prints with equal ease and élan. We’re excited that he’s here to present this rare interactive event with us.

And if you haven’t yet visited Marked Tree Vineyard, this would be the time—experience the serenity of a rural setting while enjoying world-class wines in a beautifully designed modern tasting room with views of the surrounding countryside.


They’re located at 623 Deep Gap Rd. in Flat Rock.

About José

Bayro C. was born in Bolivia in 1960 to Peruvian parents. He has lived in Mexico since 1980, became a citizen several years ago, and currently resides in Puebla, Puebla a UNESCO World Heritage Centre. He has enjoyed living in New York and Paris for extended periods of time. His interest in the visual arts started at an early age. 

The artist has exhibited his work in Bolivia, Canada, France, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, and the United States. His pieces are included in collections in the formerly mentioned countries as well as Argentina, Chile, Germany, Holland, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

El Trompo José Bayro C. (2013) and Arte Latinoamericano José Miguel Bayro Corrochano “Distorsiones de los valores en fuga” (2009) are books that have been published by Bayro C. about his work. A third book, José Byaro C. Urdimbre de porcelana en XX briosos latidos has just been published in July of this year.

The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present its first-ever community project that will simultaneously celebrate the Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras. The ticketed “Pray, Love, Eat” event on Feb. 13 will combine a workshop in traditional origami technique, an exhibition of artwork from artists in the community and yummy homemade dumplings. A portion of the proceeds from sales of “Pray, Love, Eat” exhibition artwork will support the programs of the Arts Council of Henderson County.
