About Looking Through/Seeing Beyond
When I was in school studying to be an art teacher, we got an assignment: to re-interpret an image using only white materials, focusing on the contrast of textures and shapes. I loved that project! Ever since, I find I am often drawn to working with all white materials. The Transcendence exhibit seemed like a good application for using all white.
And then on Christmas, in the middle of so much chaos, despair and uncertainty in the world – eight inches of soft snow fell and continued to fall all night and day. It felt cleansing and quieting, light and glittery - it felt like the center point of an intense period of slow transformation over several weeks. Change was coming. Change is coming.
With this offering for Transcendence, I was thinking about transformation, reaching for contrasts:
Complex to simple, dark to light, rooted and reaching. (Aliens or micro-organisms)?
A circle –collective, complete, inclusive. A spiral – pulsing, cyclic, eternal. Inward and outward.
We are really on the brink here. Terrifying and astounding. Whatever it is that’s happening in this world right now…it’s confusing, uncertain. We feel that change is coming, we are uplifted and hopeful. We are trying to see our way through to the other side.
