About Transcendence is an Empty Chair
For me, transcendence is not something experienced directly, but channelled through a feeling, hope, desire or profound experience. I might get a sense of transcendence while hiking in a beautiful setting or witnessing the birth of a child or holding the hand of a dying parent. Sometimes, glimpses of transcendence are felt when I am sitting alone, in silence, breathing slowly with eyes closed.
The work before you is my attempt to create an imaginary environment for such reflection. The chair is waiting for someone to sit down, view the walls around them and just “be”. However there is also a feeling of sadness or expectation to an empty chair, as if it is waiting for someone to occupy it. And that too is a part of my experience of the transcendent, a profound experience of the “other”, but tempered with the knowledge that it will always be beyond my ability to see it.
