Q&A with Marcy

1. What is your chosen medium?

My tools include; pencils, sketch pads, micron pens, tracing paper, scanner and MacBook Pro laptop. My art is hand drawn & digitally painted.

  • I start with a pencil drawing.

  • Once I am happy with the way it looks, I trace over my pencil lines with a black
     micron pen.

  • Then I scan the ink drawing into my MacBook Pro computer. I open the scan
in a drawing program called Adobe Illustrator. I refine the black lines.

  • Lastly, as in painting, I mix my color palette & apply it to my art. My final piece is a digital file, so then I have greeting cards and giclees printed with archival inks on high quality paper or on anything I want, really.

2. How did you start your career in art?

I graduated from The University of The Arts, in Philadelphia, with a major in
Illustration. I worked in the graphic design field for 37 years, the last 24 as a
corporate art director. Moving here in 2013, from Philadelphia, PA, gave me the freedom to get back to my artistic roots.

3. What informs your art?

My inspiration comes from a child-like curiosity in nature, color, other artist’s work, anything that is beautifully designed.

4. What jobs you have worked other than as a professional artist?

Sales associate at various clothing stores, summer job as a warehouse order
picker, fast food employee.

 5. What questions do you ask yourself when starting to work?

Once a theme inspires me, my first question would be what elements do I want
to include to express my idea fully? My finished pieces tend to be a collage of
carefully curated elements.

6. Do you have a quote that’s important to you displayed in your studio?  If so, what is it?

“What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” Sheryl Sandberg

7. Which artist (living or not) would you most like to invite for dinner? What would you serve?

Maurice Sendak, because of his enormous creativity, wit, uncompromising, playful, humorous, slightly snarky, storytelling. And his charming, delightful, endearing, timeless, inventive characters and art. Dinner would be Ratatouille with a salad and crusty french bread. A good French red wine and cheesecake!

8. What has been your most unusual request for your art?

Creating artwork/design of four different trout (Rainbow, Dolly Varden, Brown and Bull) to be used on pillows for Michaelian Home in Hendersonville.

9. What music are you listening to these days?

The Beatles, George Harrison, sitar, classical guitar.

10. What is on your nightstand?

A white noise machine.

I like to play ...
My drawings have a playful, child-like twist. Inspiration comes from children’s books, nature, bold graphics, tribal and abstract art. I create fantastical worlds from a collage of my pencil sketches. I trace over the sketches with a Micron pen. The new ink drawings are then scanned into my iMac computer. I “mix” individual color palettes for each artwork and finish by digitally painting. I then have giclées and greeting cards printed with archival inks on high-quality paper. This allows me to create a style that is uniquely my own. Each piece is a story for you to finish
