Q&A with Kelly

1. What is your chosen medium?

I have always painted with oils, but now my watercolors are taking over!

2. How did you start your career in art?

I went to college to study journalism, took an art elective and then changed my major to art. I have been painting ever since.

3. What informs your art?

My art is a response to my views on faith, relationships, introspection and nature- among others.

4. What jobs you have worked other than as a professional artist?

I have had many jobs waiting tables, a customer service rep for Templeton Mutual Funds, retail and a window designer.

5. What questions do you ask yourself when starting to work?

I always try and determine my mood before I paint.  I choose music.  I think about what colors I might use that day.  I contemplate a new piece or how to continue on one in process.

6. Do you have a quote that’s important to you displayed in your studio?  If so, what is it?

Melville Price, an abstract artist said “Abstract Painting exists within itself: it lives its own life.  One should get a sensation from painting just as you get a sensation from smoking a cigarette or drinking whiskey.  You can’t be prejudiced.  You must tear down mental barriers before you can feel the sensation that comes from abstract painting.”  I have many other quotes for personal use but this one sums it up concerning painting!

7. Which artist (living or not) would you most like to invite for dinner? What would you serve?

Picasso- not that he would be my favorite person- but I would like to paint with him and pick his brain.  I would serve very fresh seafood and simple fresh veggies with good olive oil and the best wine!

8.  What has been your most unusual request for your art?

Not so much a request but a chosen contest.  I have decided to enter a wine label contest for Beaujolais Nouveau wines in CA.  Have not won yet!

9.  What music are you listening to these days?

Right now two of my favorite songs are Holy Water by We are the Kingdom and Blinding Lights by The Weekend.

10. What is on your nightstand?

An old photograph of me and my only sister when we were young.  A copy of Rolling Stone magazine, Elle magazine, and my Kindle that I read tons of books on!  A light and a charging station. Oh, and a simple crossword book with a pen.

Stages and challenges of life are depicted in sections, compartments or layers. Landscapes evolve from repetitive marks and specific colors. I am reminded that I am connected to the bigger world through my art.
