The Gallery at Flat Rock is excited to present an evening of songs and spoken word surrounding the day in 1964 when the 22-year-old Bob Dylan arrived unannounced and knocked on Carl Sandburg’s door at Connemara in Flat Rock.
The event, which will feature musical duo The Gathering Dark, will take place from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday February 24, 2019 at The Gallery at Flat Rock.
The Gathering Dark (Josh Dunkin and Steven DuRose) will share an evening of “wild speculation” surrounding the impromptu meeting of the young poet and troubadour and the celebrated octogenarian poet and Lincoln biographer. The show will feature the songs and poems of both Dylan and Sandburg as well as the story of how their meeting fits into the context of American cultural history. “In the lexicon of American literary giants, Dylan and Sandburg tower above the flock. Why then is the story of their meeting oft-overlooked?” ask Dunkin and DuRose. Performing as Hendersonville-based group The Gathering Dark, the two promise to provide insight into the matter.
Bob Dylan at Connemara is the first of a series of artist-hosted events at The Gallery at Flat Rock. Painter Marsha Hammel suggested Dunkin and Rose for an event based on creative dialog. “The juxtaposition of artists from different fields can create a new dynamic, often an entirely new art form,” says Hammel, who is internationally-known for her modernist-inspired oil paintings featuring musicians. “As guest host of this event I hope to illustrate this idea of young artists building upon the foundations of elder artists. The old way becomes the new way,” adds Hammel.
Tickets are $15 and are available to purchase through the gallery. Light refreshments will be served. ***This show is SOLD OUT****
