The Gallery at Flat Rock Presents the Third Annual “Art in Bloom”
In a celebration of ephemeral beauty, The Gallery at Flat Rock pairs twenty professional floral designers with an equal number of artists to present imaginative interpretations of juried works of art for its third annual ‘Art in Bloom’ exhibit happening May 26 through May 28, 2018. A Preview Reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 25 will benefit high school art programs in the Henderson County Public Schools system.
“We love putting on Art in Bloom for its celebration of different art forms and the anticipation of seeing how the floral artists will interpret the art,” says gallery owner Suzanne Camarata Ball. “It’s a visual feast.”
The 2018 ‘Art in Bloom’ judges—William Henry Price, Betsy Edwards and Cherington Love Shucker—have selected twenty area artists to participate, based on submissions. Floral designers study the artwork and then create fresh floral interpretations based on what they experience. These floral pieces are exhibited next to the artwork that inspired the designer, creating a dynamic visual display. ‘Art in Bloom’ originated at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1976.
A $25 entry fee at the May 25 Preview Reception will provide needed funds for art teachers at the five Henderson County high schools, to add to their small budget. Each will be furnished with a gift card to The Starving Artist to purchase supplies for students to use. Hunter Volvo is the main corporate sponsor for this event, allowing all proceeds to go to the art teachers.

Courtney Hoelscher, an art teacher at High School, is worried regular outside sources of funding for art supplies could be disappearing. “Traditionally…our biggest financial need is discretionary funds for art supplies, as needed, from the local art store,” says Courtney. “Our schools provide us with a fixed budget and a once a year opportunity to put in an order. All five high schools have grown to rely on the supplemental gift card to The Starving Artist.”
This year’s ‘Art in Bloom’ will also include a display of student art from high schools in Henderson County. As done at ‘Art in Bloom’ 2017, a monetary award will be given for Best Fine Art, and for Best Combination of Fine Art and Floral. Awards in the categories of art and floral design will be announced at the end of the Preview Reception evening on May 25.
All works of art are available for sale. Invited floral designers include ten members of the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Ikenobo Ikebana Society, and eight professional “free form” floral designers from western North Carolina.
Added events for Art in Bloom 2018 will include special demonstrations at 11 a.m. on May 26, 27 and 28 by floral artists at Saint Paul Mountain Vineyards in Flat Rock (our neighbor). See the gallery website for details.
‘Art in Bloom’ will be free and open to the public 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day from Saturday, May 26, through Monday, May 28, 2018.
