Cathey Stoney | Oil + Cold Wax

I am interested in creating spaces that seem familiar yet are ambiguous and abstract. Working in oil and cold wax allows me to paint in a more free , abstract, and intuitive manner. My work is process driven and multi-layered. It is an exploration into mark-making, layering, drawing into layers and scraping away layers using a range of tools and techniques. These layers create a sense of history within each piece. The process of adding, subtracting, concealing and revealing is analogous to nature’s seasons and the ebb and flow of our lives; there is always the unexpected
to deal with!

I continue to develop creatively, embracing what emerges in the painting and the myriad of possibilities with the medium. It would please me if viewers are intrigued by the mysteries in each piece and find meaning that transcends ordinary perspectives.

Cathey Cassady Stoney works in her studio on Dancing Ridge in Saluda, NC. Surrounded by mountain vistas that span across the Green River Game Lands and beyond to Mount Mitchell, inspiration is ever-present. In her oil and cold wax paintings, she explores nature and the landscape she loves through the lens of abstraction, but with a nod toward realism. Her ethereal landscapes seem familiar yet embrace ambiguity, pushing the viewer beyond what they already know.

After two decades of teaching high school students how to create, appreciate, and understand the fine arts, Cathey now devotes much of her time to her own art practice. She received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from UNC-Asheville, her Art Education degree from Converse College and studied painting in France with Winthrop University. Her work is included in numerous private collections
