Ken Wheeler | Wood

The wood has a history and a story to tell and it has character that time has produced that can’t be found in new materials. The old wood is getting harder to find, but I will continue to work with it as long as I can find it.
— Ken

Ken has always enjoyed making things. Even as a small child he loved to whittle with a pocket knife, build tree houses, forts, and things of that nature.

After graduating from Western Carolina University with a degree in Parks and Recreation and having worked in that field for five or six years, he became very dissatisfied with what he was doing. Knowing that he liked to work with his hands. He began to work in several cabinet and millwork shops in order to pick up more knowledge and skills.

After a few years, he was able to start his own business making cabinets and furniture out of local woods such as cherry, walnut, maple, wormy chestnut, etc. Eventually, he moved on to making rustic furniture such as chairs, rockers, and tables out of rhododendron that grows on his property.

About twenty-five years ago he began remodeling his old farmhouse that he currently lives in. He just couldn’t bring himself to burn or discard the old wood that he tore out of the house so he began making furniture, sculptures and birdhouses out of it. Soon he became obsessed with the character, patina, and beauty of the old wood with chipped paint, nail holes, dents and scratches.
