HOWIE GRANAT | Photography

I try to have a camera with me anywhere I go. Even along my routine paths I may see a different view or an unusual perspective that leads me to stop and compose an image. With subsequent steps crafting an image within my digital toolkit, I then choose the optimal paper, size and framing to produce my art.

An observational tradition, photography has run in the Granat family for generations. Photography sparked for Howie when his father took him to his favorite camera store in NYC to pick out an SLR camera for his 13th birthday. They then proceeded to the observation deck of the World Trade Center to try it out. Howie was fortunate to capture views from a perspective never to be seen again.

For over three decades Howie’s photographic interest was professional with a focus on portraiture and special events and mentoring young photographers with his expertise in studio lighting. He is currently focused on travel and abstract imagery and continues to hone his science in printmaking, believing the framed handmade print is the final expression of his art.

Based in Brevard, Howie has traveled the world, often by bicycle, creating stories with his imagery. You can frequently find him exploring the roads and trails of Western North Carolina, always looking for that next cool experience and image.
