David Macvaugh | Wood

The wonder of the feels, the smells, and the sounds of the wood as it changes is what I hope to give each person who interacts with my work.
— David

As a small boy David woke up to the wonder of wood as he ran his hands through the saw dust covering the surface of a hutch being made by a friend’s grandfather. The amazement that wood could feel so soft and alive followed him throughout his life.

David has worked with wood and the tools that people use to create wood wonder in everything from the most ordinary to the most extraordinary. Workshops are a community that have been an integral and comforting part of his life – ranging from high school woodshop to consulting with major manufacturers in the workshops of industry.

After leaving industry, David explored deeper into the ways of wood through a journey into timber framing and tree felling. The learning from the trees themselves and the specific tools of this craft taught him to create a dwelling place and gave him insight into the architecture of wood.

He continues this journey today – still exploring, still finding solace in touching and being with the wood in the creative process.
